According to many sources 40,000 victims since 1979. The Khmer Rough planted their mines along the borders giving the country the name “Prison without walls”. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span> </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>According to the UN there are an estimated 6 million to 10 million landmines buried in soils of Cambodia. </span><span>Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) teams have cleared close to 8.5 million square meters, removing 21,170 anti-personnel mines, 132 anti-tank mines and more than 132,000 unexploded ordnance devices. Mine marking and survey teams have identified over 44 million square meters of minefields throughout the country.</span><span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span> </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>In December 1997, along with 122 other countries, Cambodia signed a Treaty to Ban Land Mines and many organizations have sprouted over the years to aid the clearing of remaining landmines and the rehabilitation of victims.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span> </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>The photographs taken at The Provincial Rehabilitation Centre in Siem Reap, established in 1986 by Handicap International Belgium and handed over to the Cambodian Government in 2010, provides services to amputees – supplying them with custom made prosthetics, wheelchairs, visual therapy, repair and maintenance, food allowance, accommodation and reimbursement of transport to and from the centre. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span> </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>The patients consist of amputees as a result of birth defects, cerebral palsy, polio and landmines. Landmine victims make up 50% of the numbers with a majority being 30-49 years of age.  Most landmine victims still carry on working in the fields to earn a living, some earning as little as US$1 a day.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span> </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>The manager of the centre said that they are currently 20% below budget to be able to run a functional rehabilitation clinic and the electricity is cut twice a month at the very least.
